Trail Etiquette & Leave No Trace Principles in Florida's Parks

Florida’s parks and wilderness areas offer breathtaking trails, diverse wildlife, and serene outdoor experiences.

Practicing proper trail etiquette and following Leave No Trace principles helps protect these environments and ensures everyone can enjoy them safely and responsibly.

  • Stay on Marked Trails: Avoid creating new paths.

Florida ecosystems like wetlands and scrub habitats are fragile — wandering off-trail damages plants and disturbs wildlife.
  • Pack In, Pack Out: Bring a small trash bag and carry out all waste.

Even biodegradable items like fruit peels attract wildlife and disrupt natural behaviors.
  • Respect Wildlife: Observe animals from a distance.

Never feed or approach alligators, birds, or other wildlife — it’s dangerous and harmful to them.
  • Right-of-Way on Trails: Hikers yield to wildlife, and downhill hikers yield to uphill hikers.

Bicyclists and trail runners yield to hikers — stay aware and courteous.
  • Minimize Noise: Keep voices low and avoid loud music.

Florida’s trails are home to delicate species; quiet footsteps preserve the peace and wildlife experience.
  • Leave What You Find: Take photos, not souvenirs.

Shells, plants, feathers, and rocks belong to the ecosystem — removing them disrupts nature’s balance.

Tip: Bring a small brush or cloth to remove sand and soil from shoes before and after hiking — this prevents spreading invasive species between Florida’s parks and preserves.

⚠️ Safety: Stay aware of weather changes, carry plenty of water, and watch for wildlife near trails — especially snakes and alligators near water.

Let someone know your route and bring a map or GPS in case cell service drops.
