Winter Garden Leaders Approve Reopening Plan for Historic Theater

City Commission Unanimously Backs Business Model to Revitalize Garden Theatre

The Winter Garden City Commission has unanimously approved a comprehensive business plan to reopen the historic Garden Theatre, marking a significant step toward revitalizing this cherished community landmark.

After its sudden closure in October 2024 due to financial difficulties, the theater's future seemed uncertain. However, city officials, in collaboration with performing arts consultant Alauna Friskics, have developed a strategy to breathe new life into the venue.

The approved plan introduces a "presenting model" that emphasizes concerts, movies, camps, and classes during the initial year. This approach aims to engage the community while managing operational costs effectively. Notably, full-scale theatrical productions are slated to return in the second year, allowing time to establish a solid operational foundation.

To implement this model, the city will partner with a third-party management company, sharing responsibilities and financial commitments. City Manager Jon Williams expressed optimism, stating, "I think we’ll have an opportunity that really focuses the theatre back on the community, offering a variety of options for everyone to enjoy."

Local actor Landon Summers, who has previously performed at the Garden Theatre, shared his enthusiasm: "I would be first to sign up on that audition list. I wouldn’t skip a beat."

The next steps involve selecting the appropriate operational partner and addressing any necessary renovations. City officials are hopeful that the theater will reopen by summer, in time to host camps and classes for children, thereby reestablishing its role as a cultural hub in Winter Garden.

For more details on the reopening plan, residents are encouraged to attend upcoming city meetings or contact the Winter Garden Parks and Recreation Department.
